The Importance Of Routine Maintenance

The Importance Of Routine Maintenance

This article relates to WordPress websites, but it is important to highlight that all websites should not be set-and-forget. Keeping your website updated and maintained is absolutely crucial. WordPress is an open-source platform, meaning it’s constantly evolving, and developers release updates regularly to improve functionality, fix bugs, and address security vulnerabilities. However, many site owners overlook or delay updates, assuming everything is running smoothly or because they’re worried about breaking something. In reality, keeping your WordPress site up to date with routine recurring maintenance is one of the most important things you can do to ensure its performance, security, and long-term success.

Here’s why regular maintenance is vital for your WordPress site:

1. Improved Security

Security is one of the biggest reasons to keep your WordPress site up to date. WordPress, like any other software, is vulnerable to hackers, bots, and other malicious attacks. When a new vulnerability is discovered, WordPress developers typically release patches and security updates to address them. If your site is running outdated versions of WordPress, plugins, or themes, you risk exposing your website to these vulnerabilities.

By regularly applying updates, it helps to ensure that your site is protected against the latest threats. Not only do core updates patch security holes, but updates for plugins and themes often contain security fixes that keep your site safe from attacks. Ignoring updates can lead to your site being hacked or compromised, which could result in data loss, downtime, or damage to your reputation. Plus it could be a costly exercise to get you back up and running again.

2. Better Performance

Routine maintenance often involves updating WordPress core files, plugins, and themes, all of which can improve the speed and efficiency of your site. Updates may include code optimisations or bug fixes that help your website run faster and more smoothly.

Additionally, keeping everything up-to-date ensures that your website is compatible with the latest web technologies. Websites that are built on outdated code can face compatibility issues, slowing down load times and leading to a poor user experience. This, in turn, can affect your SEO rankings and lead to high bounce rates.

3. Enhanced Functionality and New Features

WordPress, plugins, and themes are constantly being improved with new features and enhancements. By staying current with updates, you gain access to these new capabilities. Whether it’s a small tweak that improves usability or a major update that unlocks entirely new functionality, regular maintenance ensures you can take advantage of the latest innovations.

This is especially important for business owners who rely on features like e-commerce, forms, or custom post types. Updates may include new payment gateways, better integration with third-party services, or improved customisation options, all of which can enhance the user experience and make your site more functional.

4. Compatibility with Newer PHP Versions

WordPress is built on PHP, a server-side scripting language that gets updated periodically. When a new version of PHP is released, WordPress and its plugins are updated to be compatible with it. Running an outdated version of PHP can cause your site to break, crash, or experience compatibility issues.

Regular maintenance ensures that your WordPress site is running on the latest supported version of PHP, which can lead to better performance, fewer bugs, and a more secure environment.

5. Prevent Site Breakage or Downtime

While it might feel like an added expense to keep your website up to date, the real danger is in neglecting updates. Over time, outdated plugins and themes can cause conflicts, break functionality, or make your website incompatible with newer browsers or devices. When critical updates are ignored, minor issues can turn into major problems that cause your site to go down or malfunction.

Routine updates and maintenance help prevent these types of issues from snowballing. It ensures that all elements of your site remain compatible with each other, so you can avoid problems like broken links, missing images, or dysfunctional forms that can hurt user experience and affect your business’s credibility.

Think of your website as an investment. Ultimately it is part of your business and similar to servicing manufacturing equipment, your website also needs to be running smoothly.

6. Improved SEO Rankings

Search engines like Google reward websites that are fast, secure, and provide a good user experience. When your WordPress site is outdated, it could experience performance issues, security vulnerabilities, or broken functionality, all of which can negatively impact your SEO rankings. On the other hand, keeping your site up to date ensures that your pages load quickly, your content is accessible, and your visitors have a positive experience—factors that search engines prioritise.

Additionally, new features in WordPress updates may include SEO enhancements that can help your site rank higher. Regular maintenance also helps ensure that your site’s metadata, internal links, and SEO plugins are all functioning properly.

7. Backup and Recovery

Routine WordPress maintenance isn’t just about updates—it’s also about backups and recovery planning. Regularly backing up your site ensures that you have a fail-safe in case of accidental changes, hacks, or server failures. Many maintenance services include scheduled backups so that you always have a recent version of your site saved, ready to be restored if necessary.

No website is immune to going offline. We see it with major sites, so please don’t presume your own site is not at risk. We are here to help when an issue does arise, but it is guaranteed to be a lot less stressful if your site has undergone recent updates compared to if it is an old dinosaur.

8. Time and Cost Savings in the Long Run

While it may seem like regular maintenance is a time-consuming task, it can actually save you time and money in the long run. By keeping your WordPress site updated and maintained, you prevent small issues from escalating into major problems that might require expensive repairs or professional intervention.

Routine updates also reduce the likelihood of needing emergency fixes or losing valuable data, which can lead to costly downtime. In the same vein, staying proactive about maintenance means that your site is always in optimal condition, reducing the chances of unexpected problems that disrupt business operations.

Here are a few steps that we undertake when we do maintenance:

1. We are kept up to date (oh the irony) with all the latest updates. Anything that we deem as a major update is highlighted so that we can ensure we are reactive and respond as required on behalf of clients.

2. Always create a backup before making any updates. This means that we are able to restore a site if anything goes wrong. Often enough we see updates causing critical errors, which is why we regularly test on a remote copy prior to updating the live version of your site (see the following item).

3. In a lot of cases, we use a local copy of your site to test updates before applying them to your live website.

4. Some updates, like minor WordPress core updates, can be automated and we do use this functionality to cut down on time (and therefore money for you). This however, is not something we use much. We find that manually updating allows us to troubleshoot any issues instantly.

Routine recurring maintenance is essential for ensuring the health, security, and performance of your WordPress website. Regular updates not only improve the functionality of your site, but they also keep it secure, fast, and competitive in the ever-evolving digital landscape. By staying on top of updates and preventive maintenance, you protect your site from potential threats, enhance its performance, and ensure that it continues to meet the needs of your visitors.

Don’t wait for a security breach, performance issue, or site malfunction to prompt you into action. Prioritise routine maintenance and give your WordPress website the attention it deserves. Your visitors—and your business—will thank you for it.
